Abstract

One of the central activities of the Christian Missionaries in Africa is to eradicate or at least alleviate the impacts of Islamic teachings. Their primary targets in Nigeria are government schools being a fertile ground for their campaign. However, the teaching of Islamic studies was able to contain these great challenges, which as a result, contributed immensely in modernizing methods, techniques and curriculum of Islamic studies in these schools. Furthermore, various Islamic organizations in Nigeria have also contributed their own quota in refurbishing the methods and techniques of teaching Islamic studies in these schools. This paper discusses the methods and techniques of teaching Islamic studies in Nigeria government schools, beginning with a brief overview of the early presence of Islam in Africa. The paper also analyzes the challenges facing Islamic studies from the missionary activities, and then concludes by enumerating the efforts of some Islamic organizations in supporting and strengthening Islamic studies in Nigerian government schools.
