Abstract

‘Ilm al-Faraid is an important discipline in Islam. It is the knowledge about transferring property ownership after the death of the proprietor. Islam has underlined clear rules and rights for the deceased's heirs in obtaining a just and equitable inheritance. The importance of this knowledge was echoed by the shariah that ‘ilm al-faraid constitute half of the whole knowledge and it would be the early knowledge that will be taken from man. The deficiency of the ‘ilm will cause conflicts among family members as they do not know the discipline and have taken away the rights of others ignorantly. The conflicts are not just between siblings, but also involve between children and their mothers. Therefore, to inquire the ’ilm is very significant. Thus, the study will examine the extent to which this knowledge is offered in the formal education in Malaysia. The study will also review the form of the ‘ilm al-faraid offers either in the form of exclusively or in combination with other disciplines, as well as about duration of credit hours. The study was conducted in the mode of library research by examining documents and program outlines that involved of this ‘ilm. The data is also collected through several websites that offer the faraid course. The analysis was done by content analysis based on the course offer structure which includes course content, number of face-to-face hours (SLT) and so on. The Study found that ‘ilm alfaraid has been offered as a core course for those taking Shariah studies and some institutions have made it as an elective course for other program.
