Abstract
A high quality school system, in particular, and the education system in general, require the dedication and commitment of teachers. Therefore, the role of teachers in terms of commitment and job satisfaction is essential to stimulate the success of the teaching and learning process in order to enhance student academic achievement. This study was conducted to examine the level of job satisfaction and commitment of secondary school teachers in Kelantan. A total of 360 teachers from 18 schools with excellent achievement in the Malaysia Certificate of Education examination participated in the study. The data were collected through a cross-sectional survey using 16 items in the questionnaire. The descriptive, correlation and regression analysis was generated by using the IBM SPSS software. The findings showed a high level of job satisfaction (M=4.48, SP=.47) and commitment (M=4.36, SP=.49) among teachers. Correlation analysis showed that the relationship between job satisfaction and commitment was high, positive and significant (r=.73, p<.01). While the regression analysis explained R2=.53, p<.01, which showed that job satisfaction played a significant role in predicting teacher commitment by showing a relatively high percentage of contribution. Based on the findings, it can be confirmed that teachers who experienced high job satisfaction could enhance teacher commitment. Thus, the study suggests that job satisfaction should be supported and developed in order to enhance a good commitment among teachers in schools.
