Abstract

The sixth shift of PPPM 2013-2025 focuses on granting autonomy to the lowest level in the hierarchy of educational organizations (schools) through school-based management (SBM) and empowerment. Thus, this study aims to identify the level, relationship and influence of school -based management practices and the empowerment of teacher autonomy in Malaysian national schools. The study design is quantitative with survey techniques that use online questionnaires as data collection methods. Stratified randomization was used as a sampling technique involving 593 national school teachers in Sabah. The data were then analyzed using IBM SPSS v.25. Results show that all three variables at a high level. There is a significant positive linear relationship between SBM and empowerment with teacher autonomy. In addition, SBM and empowerment influenced 45.2% of the variance change in teacher autonomy. The emphasis on teacher competencies and the leadership capacity of head teachers is important to ensure that teacher autonomy, empowerment and SBM are always optimal.
