A systematic review was conducted covering an extensive literature exploration of previous studies from 2013-2022 following the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews Item and Meta Analysis (PRISMA) approaches, which is deemed to be suitable for review analysis. Articles were chosen from Scopus based on a few criterias. The findings highlight many relevant insights in empirical and theoretical articles, revealing the evolution of leadership behaviour theories and characteristics practised. Leadership behaviour is associated with two leadership styles; transformational and transactional and with four main themes; task, relation, changes and ethical. Researchers concluded that principals in schools should have the knowledge on suitable behaviours and practises in achieving a conducive teaching and learning environment. There also exists demands for continuous studies on principal leadership behaviour as the changes the system is going through are continuous and intensive. The study gives better perception on principal leadership behaviour and school effectiveness. The findings would be helpful to policymakers and school principals in practising successful and fulfilling leadership.
