Abstract

The use of mobile instant messaging (MIM) application to support collaborative learning is potential to be implemented in the formal education. This is because MIM applications has appropriate features such as speed, effectiveness and available at no cost has gain interest in education nowadays. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the need to develop a model of collaborative learning using MIM application in formal education. This study is based on the lecturers’ perceptions and level of acceptance and intention to use MIM application if implemented in formal courses. The study involved the lecturers in Malaysia Institute of Teacher Education (IPGM) in central zone’s campuses. The instrument used in this study is a set of needs analysis survey questionnaire which was constructed based on The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) involving descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, percentage and frequency. The findings showed that the lecturers have at least one mobile device technology with the devices they have at least the required minimum capacity to implement M-Learning. This shows that the lecturers have access to the technology needed to use MIM application in their teaching process. They also show the high level of acceptance and intend to use MIM application in their formal course.
